All claims

All claims include fatal claims, entitlement claims and medical fee only claims. Medical fee claims are claims that only require treatment from a registered medical practitioner, for example a visit to a General Practitioner.

Fatal claims

A fatal claim is a record of an injury that resulted in a fatality.

Entitlement claims

An entitlement claim is where ACC paid for more than just medical treatment. The most common example of an entitlement is where weekly compensation for lost earnings is paid while the injured client is off work. Other common entitlements paid for are: home help, housing modifications and vocational rehabilitation. These claims are generally for more serious injuries where people require time off work and take longer to return to independence. They therefore require more assistance and rehabilitation.

Account types

The benefits paid by the ACC Scheme are funded from different ‘accounts’ based on the type of claimant, type of injury and where the injury occurred. The following table provides a summary of how the account is funded and what is covered by this account:

ACC account Who funds it What’s covered
Motor Vehicle Motor vehicle owners, users and motorists through an annual vehicle levy and a petrol levy. Personal injuries involving moving motor vehicles on public roads.
Non-earners Government contribution. Personal injuries affecting people who are not in the paid workforce. These include students, beneficiaries, children, and retired people.
Earners Employees, self-employed people and private domestic workers: levies are determined based on their earnings. Non-work personal injuries (eg at home and during sport and recreation) affecting people who are in the paid workforce.
Work Employers pay levies based on the total liable earnings of all their employees.

Self-employed people and private domestic workers (eg part-time house cleaners) pay levies based on their earnings.		 Work-related personal injuries affecting employees, self-employed and private domestic workers. This excludes most motor vehicle injuries, which are covered by the Motor Vehicle account.

Unclear Fire or Explosion For example, burnt by fireworks, glass bottle exploded.

Wk Property or Characteristics This category includes causes of accidents in work property or characteristics such as:
  • hit on nose by wool press
  • injury to hand while breaking down boxes
