What levies cover

ACC provides a range of injury cover for New Zealanders, and visitors to New Zealand, including motor vehicle, non-work and work-related injuries. Employers can seek discounted levies in return for taking responsibility for workplace health and safety.

Injury cover on the roads

Levies paid with vehicle licences and on petrol fund cover for all people injured in moving vehicles while using a public road. This provides for all medical treatment, transport and rehabilitation regardless of who is at fault.

Non-work injury cover

Funding for non-work injuries comes from two sources, Government budget and levies on employee earnings. The Government funds all injuries to people that do not earn wages or salaries in New Zealand, eg children, pensioners and visitors to New Zealand. Employee levies cover non-work injuries to all wage and salary earners. The cover meets medical treatment, transport and rehabilitation costs for all of these injuries and weekly compensation for employees after the first week off work.

Work injuries and business cover

All employers and the self-employed pay a workplace levy which funds all claims for work-related injuries or disabilities. This provides for all medical treatment, transport, rehabilitation and weekly compensation entitlements beyond the first week off work.

There is a variety of cover products and discount programmes as well as payment options available to help employers and the self-employed manage their levies.

ACC Partnership Programme

The ACC Partnership Programme gives employers significant discounts on their ACC levies, in exchange for taking responsibility for their employees’ work injury claims. Under the Programme, employers’ existing levies can be cut by up to 90%.
