Applying for the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices programme

The ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices programme is designed for medium-sized employers. If you are a medium-sized employer and put in place systems and processes for managing and improving workplace safety, you may be eligible to receive discounts on your ACC WorkPlace Cover levies. There are four stages to joining the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices programme. If accepted, you will be one of over 2000 employers who have taken advantage of the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices programme.

Self-assessment

The first step to joining the Programme is to complete a self-assessment of your workplace.

To do this, use ACC442 Workplace Safety Management Practices Audit Standards (PDF 4.0M) and consider how you meet each requirement. It may take around one day to complete the self-assessment. (Rewritable form – You can enter details into this document before printing.)

Complete the application form

Once you are satisfied that you have met at least the primary level of requirements in the Audit Standards (ACC442) (PDF 4.0M), you should complete ACC4028 Workplace Safety Management Practices application form (PDF 611K) and forward it to:

    ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices
    P O Box 242
    Wellington 6140

The employee and senior management representatives who performed the self-assessment must sign the application form. You are welcome to complete the initial front page of the application form electronically but it must then be printed, signed by the appropriate people and returned to ACC in hard copy form to the above postal address.

The application form asks for information about your business, such as the number of employees and the nature of the business activities carried out.

We use this information to decide which parts of your business operations will be audited.

    Workplace audit

The next step in achieving a discount on your ACC WorkPlace cover levy is to have your workplace audited by an ACC approved auditor. You can select who will carry out your audit from the following options:

    1. An ACC approved staff auditor at no cost to your business
    2. An ACC approved external auditor with your business meeting the full cost of the audit.

If you choose to use and external auditor you can select one from our list of approved auditors, then arrange a time to take the audit.

The audit will be based on the ACC442 Workplace Safety Management Practices Audit Standards (PDF 4.0M) and includes:

    • a systematic review of your workplace safety systems and processes
    • site visits and group interviews with staff and management.

    Auditor’s report

The auditor will write a formal report on their findings, and send it to ACC.

We will write to let you know whether you’ve been accepted into the programme, and the level of discount you’ll receive (10%, 15%, or 20%).

You will receive a copy of the auditor’s report.

If you don’t meet the minimum entry level requirements because of a minor reason, which in the auditor’s opinion can be easily resolved, you may be given 30 days to make the necessary improvements and have it verified. The ’30 day rule’ is applied at the auditor’s discretion. The auditor who conducted the initial audit would be required to do the verification audit. The auditor will then complete their report and send it to us.

If you fail to meet the entry requirements this time, you can re-apply for entry to the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices programme after 12 months from the date of the audit.
