Knowing how to help your employee remain at work or return to work after an injury is important; having a plan ensures everyone is clear about what they need to do. It can also act as a checklist in the return to work process, whilst providing a record for later reference and review.
Create a return to work plan
ACC has a basic return to work plan template (DOC 29K) to help you get started. For more information, see the following fact sheets:
ACC1698 Helping employees get back to work: ACC support services (PDF 55K)
ACC1707 Helping employees get back to work: Creating a Return to work plan (PDF 56K)
ACC1709 Helping employees get back to work: Workplace monitoring (PDF 55K)
ACC1760 Completing the Employee Earnings Certificate (PDF 635K)
You can implement a return to work plan at any stage - it is best to start as soon as possible.
Individual rehabilitation plans
Your employee may also need an individual rehabilitation plan for a more serious or complex injury. ACC will arrange this.
If your employee does need an ACC-developed individual rehabilitation plan, part of this plan may include returning to work. We will let you know what’s involved, and how the employee’s rehabilitation goals tie in with the return to work plan you and your employee create together.
