ACC can only pay for treatment costs related to personal injuries that are covered by ACC legislation.
Criteria for treatment
The treatment you provide must also:
- be for the purpose of restoring the client’s health to the maximum extent practicable
- be necessary and appropriate
- match the quality required
- be given the appropriate number of times
- be given at the appropriate time and place
- be within your scope of practice as a treatment provider
- be provided after ACC has agreed to the treatment unless it’s acute treatment, public health acute services, or your contract states you don’t need prior approval.
What ACC considers when deciding to pay treatment costs
ACC administers funds in a cost-effective manner and ensures service and other payments are made only for clients who are entitled to them. When deciding whether to pay treatment costs, ACC also considers:
- the nature and severity of the injury
- the generally-accepted means of treatment in New Zealand for such an injury
- other options available in New Zealand for treating such an injury
- the cost compared with the benefit the client is likely to receive from the treatment.
