Claims lodged more than 12 months after an injury occurs are known as late lodgements. We will investigate these claims to determine whether the late lodging of the claim has prejudiced our ability to accept cover, and whether we require additional information before we can make a cover decision.
Demonstrating cultural competency is important in the provision of services relating to all claims. Please refer to the ACC1625 Guidelines on Maori Cultural Competencies for Providers (PDF 2.0M).
How to lodge a late claim for an injury that occurred over 12 months ago
When lodging a late claim, follow the general process for lodging claims, and provide the following additional information:
- medical notes from the time of the injury are preferable. For dental claims, this can include x-rays or photographs. If notes from the time are not available, then we will seek to obtain and assess any other medical information relating to the injury, to determine if the injury has cover
- information regarding the history of the injury.
Generally, we also contact both the client and yourself for information about the injury. We will also ask the client for the names of any other providers they have seen, so we can obtain medical notes from them.
How long will it take to make a cover decision?
There is a two-month timeframe to issue a cover decision for late lodgements; this can be extended for up to nine months from claim lodgement.
