February 2011 Earthquake information

If you were injured in the February 2011 earthquake

If you were injured in the earthquake, ACC may be able to help with treatment and other support. If you didn’t complete an ACC form when you were seen by a medical professional, this is okay. Please call us on 0800 101 996 and we will tell you how we can help.

Read the special earthquake claim fact sheet and ACC5737 ACC cover for injuries – Christchurch earthquake, February 2011 (PDF 252K) for more information.

Also, read the guidelines for how ACC can help with a mental injury (PDF 30K).

If you are visiting New Zealand

If you were visiting New Zealand and were injured in the Canterbury earthquake, ACC may be able to help with the cost of treatment and support you need while you are here. However, it is important to be aware that ACC replaces your right to sue for your personal injury. Learn more about how we can help you get treatment and other support. We have interpreters who can help you talk to us.

For more information read the ACC 5736 - Getting help if you’re injured visiting our country – Canterbury earthquake, February 2011 (PDF 169K).

If you have had a family member die

If someone in your family has died from an injury in the earthquake, ACC may be able to help cover your financial needs. We have specialist staff available to talk to you. Please call 0800 222 075.

The special ACC assistance for families fact sheet contains additional information on how we can help.

You can also download ACC5739 ACC assistance following an accidental death - Christchurch earthquake, February 2011 (PDF 259K).

Housing modifications

If ACC has paid for modifications to the house you will have to abandon as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes, then contact your ACC Case Manager, Support or Service Coordinator. Or phone ACC on 0800 101 996.

If you’ve been covered in the past, and your injury needs have not changed, then you will be covered in the future and you may be eligible for modifications to your new home.

ACC’s legislation does not allow us to buy or rent a replacement home for you, but we can fund modifications that are needed as a direct result of an injury.

When you’re ready to start looking at replacement homes, contact ACC possible so we can work with you and put you in touch with an assessor and the housing modifications service.

These specialists will give you advice about homes that are suitable for modification. For example, a one-storey home will be easier to get around for a person using a wheelchair.

Of course getting in early also means the specialists will be on hand to start work on your modifications, as soon as practically possible, once you find a replacement home.

Business owners

Levy invoicing, payments, and mailing, were temporarily on hold for businesses in the Canterbury region. From 2 May these will start again.

If you are an employer or self employed and are concerned about your levy invoice or making a payment to ACC, please phone our Business Service Centre on 0800 222 776. We will explain your payment options and help put a plan in place.

If you have a staff member that was injured in the earthquake, the ACC Employer Injury Management team can assist in helping them return to work as soon as possible. For more information see the Injury Management earthquake pack.

If you need other Government help

If you need any other assistance visit the Government website or call the Government helpline on 0800 779 997.
