As you probably know, the state of emergency in Christchurch has been extended for a further seven days after a major aftershock this morning. The magnitude 5.1 aftershock, the most strongly-felt since Saturday, hit at 7:49am this morning at a depth of 6km in the Lyttelton area. It was preceded by a 4.1 magnitude shock and followed by a 3.8. It was one of about 150 aftershocks to date.
It goes without saying that the emotional strain must be extremely difficult for those in Christchurch, on top of the logistical, financial and other concerns they are dealing with.
Property
This morning's aftershocks mean that all of our buildings have to be inspected again. Northwood appears to be OK but the two central city buildings are awaiting inspection and remain closed.
Work reallocation ongoing
Given the current uncertainties in Christchurch, all new STCC work is being redirected to other parts of the country. This will inevitably cause some delays and unexpected issues but we hope that all staff and clients will be understanding.
Helping out
Twenty BSC staff have been assigned to support the Earthquake Commission in managing the rush of earthquake claims. Calls to the EQC helpline (0800 Damage) will be redirected to ACC. The staff received training yesterday on managing enquiries, on how to use EQC’s web-based claim forms and are now ready to take calls.
For other staff wanting to help, the advice from Civil Defence is to make cash donations instead of offering goods. Managing goods during a response to and recovery form from a civil defence emergency can be difficult and divert essential resources. It is also logistically easier to use cash donations to obtain the goods required. For information on donating please visit www.redcross.org.nz.
Business levy payers
We have ceased invoicing and collection in the Christchurch area for the next two weeks and will review after that. We are also able to offer extended payment terms to affected firms.
ICT
As with case management work, some ICT systems are now being reorganised so that they are no longer based out of Christchurch. Users should not notice a difference but we will have greater certainty of service.

Further updates will be provided as events progress.
