Keeping a clear path in your home means everyone can move around safely. Furniture that might move or fall, especially in an earthquake, should be secured to a wall.
Cabinets and shelves
Secure cabinets, bookcases, and other furniture to the wall to keep them from falling over in an earthquake.
Secure wall units, bookcases and other tall furniture to wall studs. The easiest way is to use metal brackets found in most hardware stores. Standard steel brackets (65mm) should be more than adequate.
For information on how to make your home 'quake safe', see the Earthquake Commission website (external link).
Drawers and doors
Close drawers and cupboard doors so that you don’t walk into them.
