An estimated 117,200 people or 3% of the working population are employed in the hospitality industry, including those working in cafes, restaurants, takeaway outlets, bars, pubs, taverns, clubs and hotels.
What is the impact of injuries?
Every year a large number of people are injured in the hospitality industry. In fact, the number of injuries is increasing faster than the growth of the sector.
Figures show the injury claim rate for the hospitality industry is on the increase –there are over 1,000 new claims annually, costing ACC and the industry over $11 million.
The most common injuries in the hospitality industry are cuts and burns. Many others are injured as the result of lifting, carrying, straining, slipping, tripping, and falling. For further information about the number and cost of common injuries, email hospitality@acc.co.nz.
What can I do to reduce injuries?
Everyone has a role to play in preventing or reducing injuries in the workplace.
There are a number of practical ways to manage hazards and improve health and safety in the hospitality industry. ACC and a wide range of industry representatives have identified and developed a number of safety resources.
