The Drowning Prevention Strategy (DPS) is broken into three broad phases. This page explains the implementation phases and links to current activities.
Strategy phases
- The strategy and support framework, established in phase one, details the objectives of the Strategy.
- Currently we are in phase two.
- Phase three will consolidate progress on each of the eight objectives and focus on supporting medium to long-term action to reduce the number of people who drown in New Zealand each year. To support the Strategy’s overall aim after 2015, the phase three Implementation Plan will include planning for action from 2016 onwards.
Current phase: Full implementation (2007-2011)
The Drowning Prevention Council (DPC) was established with key stakeholders from the water safety sector and Government to lead the implementation. To assist with the delivery of the more operationally focussed objectives of the Strategy, the DPC formed advisory committees to lead specific objectives and projects.
