Heads up: phishing email sent from claims@acc.co.nz

We’ve been made aware that a phishing email is being circulated using an ACC email address (claims@acc.co.nz). The phishing email refers to a fake case file and court summons, and includes links to malicious websites and software.

What is a phishing email?

A phishing email is a scam where a legitimate company is mimicked, in this case ACC, in an attempt to trick you into downloading malicious software, or giving away personal information. Phishing scammers will contact a large number of people in the hope that some of them will fall for the scam. These scams can seem like they’re targeted at you, but in reality the same scam is being sent to many people at the same time.

What should I do if I have received this phishing email?

Do not click any links or open any attachments in an email you suspect may be a phishing email. Instead, delete it immediately. If you’ve already clicked on the links in the email, immediately run anti-virus software and contact your service provider.

How do I recognise a phishing email?

A phishing email is generally poorly written with incorrect grammar and spelling, but this may not always be the case. This particular email demands the recipient respond to a legal summon or risk prosecution to introduce a sense of urgency to act. It also does not include ACC branding or headers.
