If you're a small to medium sized business in the residential construction industry, you might be eligible for a workplace injury prevention subsidy to help pay for health and safety advice from a HASANZ-registered advisor.

    Collaborating with HASANZ to give your business a hand

    In collaboration with the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), we've designed a subsidy to help small and medium-sized businesses access specialist health and safety (H&S) advice from a HASANZ-registered professional. Specifically, the subsidy is available to support businesses in developing a H&S action plan or improvement activity targeted at working in and around vehicles - including moving equipment and plant - on a construction site and/or falls from heights.

    This subsidy is available to residential construction businesses in the following subsectors:

    • residential building construction
    • land development and site preparation
    • building structure services
    • building installation services
    • building completion services
    • other construction services.

    Through the HASANZ Register, you can search for a professional H&S advisor to help you create an action plan or implement an improvement activity that will be covered by this subsidy. The HASANZ Register is a national online register of verified workplace H&S professionals and a one-stop-shop for businesses to find reliable, quality H&S advice and services. Note you can use the advanced search function on the HASANZ register to search for an advisor with skills and experience in vehicles, including mobile plant, and/or falls from heights.

    How to get started

    In order to understand the H&S needs of your business, a good place to start is with an H&S assessment. We recommend your business completes an online SafePlus assessment before you engage an H&S advisor from HASANZ. The assessment is a good first step towards preparing an effective action plan.

    SafePlus is a free, online self-assessment tool, that aims to support H&S improvements for small and medium-sized businesses. It's WorkSafe endorsed, is a simple way to get feedback from people in all parts of your business, and provides guidance on the H&S improvement priorities identified by the assessment.

    The intent of this subsidy is to drive action through an action plan or a specific improvement activity. Therefore, the subsidy doesn't cover the cost of an H&S audit or assessment. We recommend you use the free WorkSafe endorsed assessment tool.

    H&S advisory services we'll contribute to

    The workplace injury prevention subsidy for H&S advisory services can help pay for an H&S action plan or improvement activity, undertaken or signed off by a HASANZ-registered advisor. The action plan or improvement activity must be in the areas of working in and around vehicles, including moving plant, and/or falls from heights.

    The plan should respond to the question: What are we going to do to have better health and safety in this workplace?

    An action plan is a documented list of objectives, activities, tasks, timelines, responsibilities and other information that outlines how you'll address the risks associated with working in and around vehicles and falls from heights in a workplace.

    Improvement activity

    An improvement activity should respond to the question: What has the health and safety consultant helped us to put in place to improve the health and safety of our workplace?

    An improvement activity is the actions and/or tasks that have been implemented to address risks associated with working in and around vehicles and falls from heights in a workplace.

    Our contribution

    We'll pay 50% of the cost of an advisory service from a HASANZ-registered H&S advisor up to a maximum amount, depending on the size of your business.

    *Maximum contribution excludes GST

    The maximum contribution varies according to the size of the business, eg an H&S advisor is likely to spend more time providing their advice to a medium-sized business, so the service costs may be more than the cost for a small business.

    To be eligible for this workplace injury prevention subsidy, your business must be:

    • a small to medium-sized business with around 6 to 99 employees
    • in the following construction industry subsector:
      • residential building construction
      • land development
      • site preparation
      • building structure services
      • building installation services
      • building completion services
      • other construction services.

    How to redeem your subsidy offer

    1. Log in to MyACC for Business to check that you’re eligible and the amount you’re eligible for.

    2. Complete a SafePlus assessment* to identify your H&S improvement priorities.
    3. Visit the HASANZ register to find a suitable H&S advisor to engage with.

    4. Go back to MyACC for Business and upload an itemised receipt from your purchase and a copy of the action plan and/or the improvement activity report from your H&S advisor. If you don't have a receipt, include an invoice showing the item(s) and a screenshot of your bank or credit card statement showing the transaction.
    5. If you've provided all the correct information, we'll transfer our contribution to your nominated bank account.
    6. We'll formally acknowledge your business' participation and commitment to improving workplace safety.

    *This is recommended as a good first step but it's not a requirement of the subsidy. You may use any assessment tool that you prefer or engage an H&S advisor directly without a prior H&S assessment or audit.

    Note: The information and copies of reports provided to us will only be used for research and continuous improvement purposes. No private or commercially sensitive information will be disclosed to third parties nor used for any other purpose than to improve the subsidy product.
