Stay up to date with our maternal birth injury mahi

Released 07/06/2022

We’ve started wider discussions with professional bodies and health practitioners about our preparations to extend ACC cover to include maternal birth injuries as accidents.

If you’re interested in staying up to date on this mahi there are two ways you can do this. Last month, we mentioned the GETS notice which is now live. We also have an online form where you can register your details to receive updates.

We’d like to hear from a wide range of practitioners, regardless of whether they’re registered with us or not, so please pass this on to any colleagues who have skills and expertise relating to birthing injuries.

Maternal birth injury information page now live

This webpage will be updated regularly with answers to questions we receive from practitioners.

What this means for those who care for birthing parents and whānau

We know different types of practitioners, such as physiotherapists, rongoā Māori practitioners, and acupuncture providers, will already be providing care to kiritaki with birthing injuries. We’re looking at how this will work with the maternal birth injury service to meet the needs of our communities.

Commercial arrangements may differ depending on the type of practitioner, but we’ll be working with professional bodies and associations to confirm those details.

We’re setting up an external expert advisory group to support and guide this mahi. We’ve been in touch with relevant professional bodies to seek nominations and will start meeting with this group over the next month.
