Managing concussion

Released 17/12/2019

ACC has funded the Axis Sports Concussion Centre of Excellence (SCCoE) pilot programme in Auckland since 2017. The Centre offers a fully-subsidised, self-referral service for the treatment of concussive injury sustained while playing sport.

The pilot, which ends 31 December 2019, identified the importance of primary care in the assessment, management, and education of clients with mild to moderate concussion.

Going forward, ACC is looking at how primary care can be supported to help improve the quality of care provided to clients with concussion through the delivery of a nationally scalable clinical pathway and concussion assessment tool.

Axis is self-funding the work begun during the pilot on a short term basis, and is actively looking for research funding in the long term. Patients can continue to be referred to the clinic as per usual at no charge.
