Pressure is building on sporting Kiwi kids to train harder, longer, and more frequently. But at what cost?


Injuries usually seen in professional sports players are now happening in 10 and 11 year olds, says TVNZ current affairs show Sunday. In the age of professional sport, the pressure to train and perform at increasingly higher levels is putting Kiwi kids at risk. 

In the story, our Head of Injury Prevention Isaac Carlson references our findings from earlier this year when we asked 'how much sport is too much'? 

The story looks at the best ways to keep our young Kiwis healthy and loving their sport. It originally aired on TVNZ 1 on 1 September 2019.

Balance is better

In recent years there’s been a growing trend in young people specialising at an earlier age in a single sport.

Combined with this, there are increasing opportunities for them to engage in more structured sports training and competition. This exposes them to high-intensity training from an earlier age.
