Healthy for Life is a new TV show set to air on TVNZ 1 to help keep those over 65 active during bubble life.

We're helping to bring a new TV show to screens across New Zealand to keep those over 65 active during lockdown.

Hosted by former-Silver Fern Bernice Mene, Healthy For Life will air on 2 May, with a focus on strength and balance while also providing tips on staying safe at home.

The show will also share clever ideas on keeping your brain active, keeping up with friends, and healthy eating.

Before the lockdown
1,100
community-based strength and balance classes were run across NZ each week.

Our Head of Injury Prevention, Isaac Carlson, says around the age of 65 there's an increased risk of injury from falling, but maintaining strength and balance can help people keep mobile and prevent injuries from falls.

"Regular exercise is one of the best things anyone can do to stay fit and healthy. Staying active and having core strength and balance keeps you steady on your feet. This is especially important as we age to reduce the risk of a fall and maintain confidence to be active and independent."

Strength and balance can be done at home with a dining table and chair

Isaac hopes the Healthy For Life programme will introduce more people to our Live Stronger for Longer injury prevention programme for over 65s, and encourages everyone to have a go.

"For anyone joining in, remember when you're exercising at home it's important to wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, and make sure you have enough space to move in without hitting or tripping over anything."

Healthy For Life screened on 2 May at 9am on TVNZ 1, and repeats Saturdays thereafter. It's also available TVNZ OnDemand.

The show is part of a new collaboration with TVNZ and partners across the health sector.
