May Turnaround Plan report
Our monthly Turnaround Plan report for May has been released and, with a month to go until fiscal year end, the plan continues to deliver improved results.
More people are recovering sooner, return-to-work performance has improved, and fewer people with less serious injuries are accessing support longer-term, says ACC Chief Executive Megan Main.

The growth rate of the long-term claims pool reduced further in May and is now negative (-0.1 per cent), reflecting a net decrease of 68 claims over the month to 24,647.
The long-term claims pool is the number of clients who have received weekly compensation for more than a year.
“What we have seen over the past few years is rehabilitation costs increasing and more people with less serious injuries staying on the scheme for longer,” Megan says.
“For scheme sustainability, we need to better support those clients who have injuries that historically wouldn’t need such a long period of support. That’s where our current focus is.”
It’s about ensuring our clients get the right level of support, at the right time, for their injury-related needs, within the boundaries of our legislation, Megan says.
“Our responsibility is to support our clients while they recover from injury and to rehabilitate them back to being work ready – every day our people are focused on doing just that – helping thousands of New Zealanders back to independence.”
ACC Turnaround Plan progress reports are published on our Resources page on the last business day of every month.
About the ACC Turnaround Plan
Our Turnaround Plan is underpinned by three priorities, which will drive improved rehabilitation and organisational performance, and more cost-effective support for injured people.
The priorities of the Turnaround Plan are:
- Putting clients first with care that leads to lasting recovery
- Getting New Zealanders back to work and independence
- Resetting ACC and getting the organisation back to basics
The Turnaround Plan responds to the recent independent review into our claims management approach and rehabilitation performance, and an updated Letter of Expectation by Minister for ACC Scott Simpson.
It also addresses recommendations in a Board-commissioned review into our organisational culture and a Treasury-commissioned review of our investment function.
Alongside the release of the Turnaround Plan in January, we also announced a new strategy, Statement of Intent and Service Agreement that will support our performance turnaround over the next four years and our goal to have a high-performance culture.
