March Turnaround Plan report
We've released our latest monthly Turnaround Plan report today, highlighting March performance results.
ACC remains on track to meet key performance targets set out in our Turnaround Plan.
The March Monthly Turnaround Plan Report was released today, which shows we’ve delivered another strong step forward in our turnaround, with consistent month-on-month improvement.
ACC Turnaround Plan – March monthly report
The growth rate of the long-term claims pool continues to reduce and was 0.3 per cent at the end of March – the lowest it’s been in 10 years. While the pool increased slightly overall, we expect reductions in the coming months and remain focused on meeting our year-end target. The long-term claims pool is the number of clients currently receiving weekly compensation for more than one year.
Reducing long-term reliance on support, especially for non-serious injuries, remains a top priority, says ACC Chief Executive Megan Main. In mid-2024, we changed the way we managed some long-term claims to ensure these clients were getting the dedicated, interdisciplinary support they needed to get back to independence, Megan says.
Return to work rates is another area we’re seeing continued improvement in, particularly the key one-year return-to-work rate, Megan says.
The percentage of clients receiving weekly compensation who returned to work or independence within one year was at the year-end target of 92 per cent in March.
“There is strong evidence that getting back to, or staying engaged in, work has a positive impact on the person’s mental and physical health. Making sure clients get the right support at the right time also helps ensure sustainability of the ACC scheme into the future,” Megan says.
“Our role is to support people to recover from their injuries and get back to work and independence. But we cannot do this alone. I’m asking all New Zealanders to play their part by keeping themselves and their communities safe and by playing an active role in their recovery.
“We know a well-supported return to work, and staying active and socially connected while recovering, help people recover faster. I want to acknowledge the employers who are supporting their staff to recover at work and the providers working with ACC’s clients to deliver better rehabilitation outcomes.
“Keeping ACC sustainable and meeting these targets is a collective effort from us all.”
ACC Turnaround Plan progress reports are published on our Resources page on the last business day of every month.
About the ACC Turnaround Plan
Our Turnaround Plan is underpinned by three priorities, which will drive improved rehabilitation and organisational performance, and more cost-effective support for injured people.
The priorities of the Turnaround Plan are:
- Putting clients first with care that leads to lasting recovery
- Getting New Zealanders back to work and independence
- Resetting ACC and getting the organisation back to basics
The Turnaround Plan responds to the recent independent review into our claims management approach and rehabilitation performance, and an updated Letter of Expectation by Minister for ACC Scott Simpson.
It also addresses recommendations in a Board-commissioned review into our organisational culture and a Treasury-commissioned review of our investment function.
Alongside the release of the Turnaround Plan in January, we also announced a new strategy, Statement of Intent and Service Agreement that will support our performance turnaround over the next four years and our goal to have a high-performance culture.
