Underlying performance gains continue but Sensitive Claims adding pressure

ACC 2

The September month-end Turnaround Plan Report is now available.

The September month-end Turnaround Plan Report has now been released, outlining ACC's latest performance results.

ACC tracks two measures of the long-term claims pool (LTCP), which is the number of clients who have been receiving weekly compensation for more than one year.

The first measure, the LTCP excluding Sensitive Claims, reduced by 91 claims through September, contributing to a five per cent reduction in this portion of the pool over the past 12 months.

However, this reduction is being offset by growth in Sensitive Claims.

In September, there were 2,936 Sensitive Claims in the pool, an increase of 132 claims from August. This growth meant the total LTCP increased by 41 claims overall.

Return-to-work rates show the percentage of clients receiving weekly compensation who return to work within the durations we report on. These rates demonstrate how effectively we are supporting clients to return to work or independence.

Return-to-work rates were largely stable in September, with the nine-month result improving slightly, while other rates dipped 0.1 per cent.

While underlying performance is improving, Sensitive Claims are also having a growing impact on return-to-work rates, as backdated weekly compensation claims impact these measures.

Elsewhere in the September report, social rehabilitation and elective surgery costs remain generally in line with ACC’s budget.

About the ACC Turnaround Plan

ACC introduced a Turnaround Plan in 2025/26 to deliver better outcomes for injured New Zealanders and improve financial results.

The 2026/27 Turnaround Plan builds on the momentum achieved last year, ensuring injured New Zealanders receive the care they need while supporting the Scheme's long-term financial sustainability.

Our Turnaround priorities are:

  • Care that leads to lasting recovery
  • Timely return to work and independence
  • Efficient organisation, sustainable Scheme
  • Capable, enabled, empowered people

ACC publishes monthly progress reports to provide transparency about its performance and delivery of the Turnaround Plan.

ACC Turnaround Plan progress reports are published on our Resources page on the last business day of every month.
