Health sector engagement

It’s vital we work with experts like you in helping New Zealanders get back to work and independence after injury. 2025 is about focusing on how we work with the health sector and commission for services to improve outcomes for injured people.

We know that longer recovery timeframes and extended time off work has negative impacts for the injured person, their whānau, employer, and community. This is also putting pressure on the Accident Compensation Scheme and sustainability of the entitlements we provide.

The challenges

two thirds
Two thirds of weekly compensation claims now represent low complexity injuries, such as sprains and strains.

⬆ 30%
30% increase in the rate of injured workers going onto weekly compensation since 2014.

> 20,000
More than 20,000 kiritaki (clients) are now off work for and therefore on weekly compensation for more than a year.
Total spend
⬆ 9%
9% increase since 2019 on treatment and rehabilitation. Claims have only increased by 0.2% per annum.

Changes to our service commissioning

We’re moving towards a collaborative co-commissioning model, working closely with providers and suppliers of health services – the experts in helping injured people – to design solutions that achieve better outcomes for kiritaki. The clinical voice is a vital part of our new commissioning approach.

We plan to strengthen clinical leadership and have a clinical governance lens across all aspects of commissioning. We’ll be working towards open sharing of outcome data to increase transparency and give New Zealanders greater visibility of what they can expect on their recovery journey.

We’ve begun a series of online engagements from February 2025, starting with sessions focused on how we work with general practice and the secondary care sector.

Online engagement events

We value the important role you play in helping people recover from injury and return to their everyday lives. We’re hosting a series of online engagements, because we believe you’ll have a range of ideas on how we can work together to achieve better outcomes for injured New Zealanders.
