Boston Consulting Group appointed to undertake independent review

Released 05/10/2023

As a large funder of health services in New Zealand, and as a good steward of public funds, it’s important we understand the current dynamics of the health sector, including our own impact on it.

A closed tender was issued in July, and we have since appointed Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to carry out an independent review of our health services environment.

The purpose of the independent review is to help us learn more about how we can best work with the health sector and procure and commission services in this changing environment.

What’s the scope of work?

This is an independent review of our health services commissioning environment.

It will:

  • allow us to better understand the changing healthcare environment. This will enable us to work with the health sector to procure and commission services more effectively
  • evaluate international best practice and interventions that have been successful overseas which may also work within the New Zealand context
  • provide a full picture view, which we can combine with other work such as what the Rehabilitation Improvement Group is currently undertaking internally.
As a provider of health services, how can I contribute to the review?

Boston Consulting Group have utilised the work already undertaken by the Rehabilitation Improvement Group. The next step will be a more in-depth discussion on pain points, challenges, and opportunities around how we commission and procure services with a range of professional and peak bodies.

Unfortunately, due to the timeframes, we are unable to include all professional body groups.

What are the timeframes?

Work on the review has begun and opportunities identified will inform part of our work to realise our strategy, Huakina Te Rā, over the next ten years.

Learn more about our strategy, Huakina Te Rā

We will be ensuring that this review and the Rehabilitation Improvement Group work are aligned and building towards the broader strategic direction of Huakina Te Rā.

We will keep you updated as this work progresses.
