'Have a hmmm' this summer

Handy hint videos and top tips

Enjoy your summer activities but remember to 'have a hmmm' and think before acting.

Gardening

Top tips:

  1. Grab your safety gear
  2. Break up heavy loads
  3. Use ladders safely
  4. Mind your back when mowing
  5. Ease those weeds out
Hi I’m Tony
and today I want to recap on my top tips
to make sure you don’t hurt yourself in the garden.
So let’s have a “hmmm”
Sounds obvious, but warm up before doing heavy tasks
and make sure you wear the right safety gear for the job.
Better still, keep it close to the tools you’re using
as a reminder to always use it.
If you’ve got lots of heavy loads
to move around the garden
break them up into smaller loads each time.
Better still, use a wheelbarrow
Keep your back nice and straight
and bend your knees as you’re lifting
and make sure your path is completely clear.
If you need to use a ladder
make sure it’s in good condition.
Open it up fully
and place it on a nice level surface.
And once you’re up there
don’t over reach.
It’s better to move it than take a risk.
And what ever you do
don’t use those top rungs.
You’re just asking for trouble.
Some lawn mowers can be temperamental to start.
It’s more about technique than brute force.
Don’t get over excited
otherwise you will do yourself a mischief.
Some of the more modern mowers
have a push-button start.
Way easier.
Now weeding, the necessary chore.
First up, always wear gloves.
And for really stubborn weeds
you might like to soak the ground
with water the day before.
Position yourself as close to the ground as possible
It’s more about gently easing them out
rather than a hard wrench.
So remember
what ever you’re up to in the garden
it’s a good idea to stay hydrated.
I like to add a squeeze of lemon
and a pinch of salt too.
Happy gardening, cheers!

Road cycling

Top tips:

  1. Check your bike before you ride
  2. Check your gear before you ride
  3. See and be seen
  4. Communicate with other road users
  5. Share the road responsibly
Kia ora!
And we’re here today
to get some top biking tips for out on the road.
Right, let’s saddle up.
Woah, not so fast Mark.
First, let’s have a “hmmm”
Before you hop on
make sure your tyres are up to pressure,
Check.
your brakes work,
Check.
and your chain is all good.
Check.
And now we’re ready to go?
Not quite! Oh.
Make sure your helmet fits snug
and fastened securely.
No flappy bits on your gear either,
like loose shoelaces.
No one likes flappy bits.
If you say so Mark.
Let’s go!
Wait for me.
Staying safe means being seen on the road.
Use a rear flashing light even during the day
and be aware of sneaky doors
when you’re passing parked cars.
It’s great to communicate with other road users
politely of course.
Hand signals for turns
and thumbs up for thank yous.
Stay aware and position yourself
safely on the road when there’s traffic.
If there’s a bike lane, use it.
Well that was a lot of fun
thanks Emily.
No worries.
Well what do you reckon,
once more around the block?
If you can keep up!

Trail cycling

Top tips

  1. Check your bike before you ride
  2. Check your gear before you ride
  3. Know your bike
  4. Know your limits
  5. Look where you want to go
Hi I’m Mark Hadlow
and this is the legendary Emily Shearman.
Kia ora!
And we’re out here today to have a “hmmm”
with some top biking tips
out there on the trail.
Good little reminders
whether you’re a learner
or a seasoned professional.
First things first
a quick safety check.
Right Emily?
That’s right Mark,
the old “A B C”
air, brakes and chain.
Check, check, check.
Make sure your tyres are up to pressure
and test those brakes.
And make sure that your battery is full.
Next!
Make sure your helmet is snug
and fastened securely.
I prepared mine earlier
I look great.
Know your bike before you put it through its paces.
It pays to practice on a nice easy place
before going hard out.
This will help you handle it well when it counts.
This is especially important
if you’re using an e-bike
and you’re not used to it yet.
Ay Mark?
Yeeeeeeeeeees!
Pushing yourself is one thing
but don’t over reach.
Match your trail to your ability
and let others know your plans
before you ride, yeah?
And make sure you pack snacks
especially for longer rides
Gotta keep your energy levels up.
And have you got a final riding tip for us?
Sure, remember some trails have obstacles
like narrow bits and steep cliff edges.
Where you look is where you’ll ride
so keep your eyes on where you want to go
and you’ll be sweet.
Awesome, thank you Emily.
Easy as.
And they were your Top Trail Tips.
Fancy another spin?
Always.
I was afraid you were going to say that.
Here we go!

In home injuries

Top tips

  1. Remove any trip hazards
  2. Use step ladders safely
  3. Look out for slippery surfaces
Kia ora. Let's go inside and take a moment to have a 'hmmm'.
Haere mai.
Hmmm. Do those need to be right there?
Better not risk it. It's smart to put away items that might trip you up.
If you have a rug you can't do without,
remember to secure it with a nons-lip mat or double-sided tape.
If there's something not within easy reach, no biggie. Grab a stepladder.
Make sure it's stable, fully extended, and avoid the top rung.
You've got it.
Wooden stairs — they look great,
but they can be a bit slippery when you've got socks, slippers
or your baby onesie on. Remember to take your time.
Some anti-slip tape can be helpful too.
And let's not forget about outside.
It's good to get rid of any moss or other stuff
that could cause you to slip.
Easy. See ya next time for some more handy tips.

DIY

Top tips

  1. Find better ways to lift heavy items
  2. Protect your back
  3. Wear appropriate safety gear
  4. Use tools calmly and safely
Kia ora. I'm back with a few easy ways to nail your DIY.
Ready to get stuck in? First, let's have a 'hmmm'.
When moving something heavy, use a wheelbarrow. Check your path is clear
and keep your back straight and knees bent when moving.
Movements involving your back are a big part of any DIY.
So avoid any tricky twists or added strains
by using tools like an extender pole when painting. Easy.
MUFFLED: Whatever... (SIGHS)
Whatever DIY you're doing,
chuck on the appropriate safety gear before you get stuck in.
If you've got it stored next to your tools, you're more likely to use it.
Each year thousands of people injure themselves using hammers,
so take your time and focus on the correct technique when using one.
Get a pro to do it for you
if you think the job's a little too tricky or needs special gear.
Enough from me. Let's get into it.

Swimming

Top tips

  1. Know how to float
  2. Find the safest place to swim
  3. If in doubt, stay out
  4. Take care of children and others

here's a few tips to help you have more fun in the sun
time for a hmmm
It  it's important to know your limits
if you don't know how to float well get some lessons

just floating can save your life
rips can drag you into deeper water
Surf lifeguards like me can help you find
the safest parts to swim by placing red

stay between the flags and we will look out for you
waves can be bigger than they look while
rivers have fast moving water
we all know how unpredictable the weather
can be so if you're ever in doubt don't go out
tamariki always need to be supervised
by an adult in and near water so keep
them within arms reach and remember

case they need your help out there

the conditions to make sure you're up

never surfed before
A runaway board could damage

Kia ora, I'm Bryn!
If you're hitting the trails
here's a few handy hints to make sure an
injury doesn't ruin your ride
Thanks Bryn
Now's a great time to "have a hmmm"
before you get on your bike give it a
quick once over it's as easy as ABC
A Air - are your tires the right pressure
B Brakes - are they working properly
C Chain - check it isn't loose
Whether it's a new trail or one
you know well take it easy on your first
couple of runs
Things like jumps and
corners can pop out of nowhere so take
your time to find your flow
Gloves knee pads and other
protective gear are great when cruising
down steep tracks, while a helmet is a no-brainer
You can check it using the
'241 method' and if your helmet takes a
hit get a new one
When on the trails your eyes lead your
body if you're looking at a tree then
that's where you'll end up
so look where you want to go
Different trails are for different
levels of experience so read the ride
and stick to the ones you can handle
If you do need a break, stop off
the track so you're well away from
others and don't cause a collision
All right then let's get going!

Gym and fitness

Top tips

  1. Warm up
  2. Ease into it
  3. Get advice from a registered personal trainer
  4. Be realistic
  5. Have recovery days
Kano. Today we're here to talk exercise.
Whether you're sitting your personal
best bench press
or catching up on the socials on the
treadmill,
you're out there doing the mucky.
So, let's stay safe and keep that good
thing going.
It's time to have a
When you're excited or in a tight time
frame, you may want to get straight into
it. But warming up properly helps give
your body a heads up and helps to both
prevent and recover from injury. So get
that blood pumping first.
Exercise is a good thing. Like anything,
too much, too hard, too fast can stitch
you up big time. Ease into it, champ.
Your body will thank you for it.
There's so much fitness content out
there, but if you want to try something
new, your best bet is to contact a
registered personal trainer.
You can find one near you at reps.org.n.
We know part of exercise is pushing
yourself, and you know your body best.
Be honest about your limits.
It's not a competition. You're doing it
for yourself. And think of the long
term.
When we love what we do, sometimes it's
hard to take a break. Our bodies need
time to recover.
Make recovery part of your routine by
doing some lighter movement days and
listening to your body for when it needs
to rest.
Recovery is part of working out.
Well, that's it from us.
Keep up the good work
and remember to have a
