Non-list equipment ordering

Released 02/03/2026

In November 2025 we advised we’re looking at our process for non-list equipment requests. This forms part of ACC and Enable New Zealand’s (ENZ) ongoing work to improve service to our clients and support long-term sustainability of the Accident Compensation Scheme.

To ensure services continue to meet clients’ needs and align with legislative intent, we’re reviewing opportunities to improve processes around ordering non-list equipment.

What you need to know

ACC and ENZ continue to review higher cost non-list equipment orders. The submission process has not changed, however:

  • you will receive more frequent contact from ACC staff in the ENZ MRES Application for non-list equipment requests if essential information is missing from assessments
  • it's important to continue to provide clear clinical rationale and supporting information, which is outlined below.

What does this mean for you?

You may experience an increase in ENZ MRES Application messages and emails from both ACC and ENZ teams if further information is required.

Please ensure reports clearly outline the link between the injury, recommended equipment, duration of need, and rehabilitation goals, and provide rationale where non-list items are recommended. Missing or unclear information may delay decisions.

To help us assess your requests quickly, please ensure you:

  • submit all non-list equipment requests through the ENZ MRES Application for review, noting that these must not be provided to the ACC Recovery team member for pre-approval
  • clearly explain the connection between equipment recommendations, injury requirements, duration of need, and rehabilitation goals
  • request list equipment in the first instance, and clearly document the rationale where list options are clinically inappropriate
  • include detailed clinical rationales and equipment specifications for non-list equipment recommendations
  • provide a minimum of two options for supporting the clients need
  • ensure non-list equipment recommendations are cost effective and of suitable quality to address the specific injury requirements
  • avoid making equipment recommendations that exceed the specific injury needs.

Thank you for your continued partnership. For questions or to provide feedback, contact mres@acc.co.nz.
