Changes to non-list equipment orders exceeding $1,000

Released 01/07/2026

As you know, we’ve been looking at our process for non-list equipment requests. This is part of ongoing work with Enable New Zealand (ENZ) to improve services to our kiritaki (clients) and support long-term sustainability of the Accident Compensation Scheme.

This update is to inform you of a process change that will be implemented in the coming weeks.

What's changing

All non-list equipment orders with items of $1,000 and over will be sent to ACC Recovery teams for approval before the equipment is delivered.

Your submission process doesn’t change, but you can expect more frequent communication as requests are reviewed if essential information is missing.

Continued focus on non-list equipment orders

Our priority is delivering excellent recovery outcomes for injured New Zealanders, while ensuring ACC remains sustainable for future generations.

We can’t do this alone — we need support from assessors to make sure people are getting the right support for their injury and recovery.

To help us assess your requests quickly, please make sure you:

  • request list equipment in the first instance where appropriate
  • provide clinical rationale as to why list items are unsuitable
  • ensure all reports clearly outline the link between the covered injury, recommended equipment, duration of need, and rehabilitation goals
  • avoid making equipment recommendations that exceed the specific injury needs
  • offer more than one equipment recommendation or suitable alternatives
  • note the information required for equipment requests outlined in the MRES Operational Guidelines (pages 12-13).

Thank you for your continued support in adopting these improvements. The assessment community plays an important role in continuing to strengthen service quality by improving clinical rationale, assessments, and recommendations so they’re well aligned to clients’ injury-related needs.
