New guidelines for returning to work after surgery

Released 04/05/2026

We’ve collaborated with the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA) to develop evidence-based guidelines that provide clear expectations for recovery and return to work following elective surgery procedures. They were developed using international evidence and expert clinical opinion from NZOA specialty societies.

The guidelines are for specific surgeries, including:

  • anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction
  • ankle lateral ligament reconstruction
  • knee arthroscopy
  • lumbar discectomy
  • lumbar fusion
  • rotator cuff repair
  • total or partial knee replacement.

How to use the guidelines

The guidelines are intended to be used by surgeons to support their certification practices and conversations with patients about their recovery, to help them get back to work and independence sooner. By following these guidelines, surgeons can help support an early and safe return to work, including returning in a modified or graduated capacity where appropriate.

They may also be useful for GPs and other certifying providers, employers and vocational providers supporting clients to return to work safely.
