Join vocational medical services as a VMS assessor

Released 29/05/2026

Apply to become a vocational medical services (VMS) assessor, where you’ll play a critical role in supporting a client through their vocational rehabilitation journey. The role offers another flexible way to practice medicine, and is an opportunity to make a real difference in recovery and return‑to‑work outcomes for our kiritaki.

What is a VMS assessor?

A VMS assessor is a medical practitioner who provides independent medical assessments to support vocational rehabilitation following injury or illness. VMS assessors provide practical, evidence-based advice and recommendations to help inform safe, sustainable return‑to‑work planning. The role involves working alongside ACC and the wider recovery team, while maintaining independence from the treating relationship.

Flexibility, professional satisfaction, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact

Many VMS assessors report high job satisfaction and a strong sense of purpose. The role offers flexibility and the opportunity to work in a considered way – focusing on careful evaluation, sound clinical reasoning, and clear recommendations within an independent assessment setting. It also enables you to make a meaningful difference in a client’s recovery and return-to-work journey.

As a VMS assessor, you’ll enjoy a flexible way of working. You’ll engage directly with ACC to confirm your availability, with opportunities to travel across New Zealand where needed. This means you can tailor your work schedule to fit your lifestyle, whether you’re looking for part-time opportunities or want to integrate VMS work alongside your existing practice.

Who should apply?

We’re looking for medical practitioners from across New Zealand who have experience in workplace disability management and/or occupational rehabilitation, and are interested in an opportunity to tailor your work schedule to fit your lifestyle. It’s particularly suited to those with experience in occupational health, rehabilitation, or general practice who meet ACC’s VMS assessor eligibility requirements.

Training and support are central to the VMS assessor role. You’ll have access to onboarding learning to support high quality assessment reports and consistent, evidence-based recommendations, as well as 12 months of peer mentoring support.

How to apply

If you’re ready for a new chapter in your medical career, vocational medical services might be the right role for you. The application process is straightforward, and support is available every step of the way. For more information and to apply, visit ACC.co.nz/VMS
