Change to Pain Management Service referrals from 1 December
From 1 December 2026, a contract change will affect referral pathways for Pain Management Services.
We continue to have two levels of pain management support available for clients:
-
Community services – interdisciplinary services for clients with persistent pain that’s not resolving as expected, including clients with a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of complex regional pain syndrome who can be supported in a community setting
-
Tertiary services – to support clients with more clinically complex or intensive needs through interdisciplinary outpatient and intensive programmes.
What's changing?
From Tuesday 1 December 2026, referrals to community Pain Management Services will only be made by ACC. If you're recommending community Pain Management Services for a client, you'll need to send your recommendation to ACC rather than referring directly to a community pain management provider.
Tertiary Pain Management Services providers may continue to receive referrals directly from treating providers. However, we recommend sending all requests for Pain Management Services to ACC so we can ensure clients access the right service.
What do I need to do?
-
Email your pain management support recommendations to the client’s recovery team or claims@acc.co.nz.
-
You don’t have to state which service level is appropriate. Please describe your patient’s situation and why you’re recommending ACC-funded pain management services, and ACC will determine the most suitable pathway.
