Updated threshold for pre-approval on non-list equipment orders

Released 28/08/2026

In the July Provider Update, we shared that all non-list equipment orders with items over $1,000 would be sent to ACC for pre-approval.

We’ve updated the threshold. From Monday 7 September 2026, all non-list equipment orders with items over $2,000 will be sent to ACC for approval prior to dispatch. The updated threshold will allow us to better review orders, while still ensuring their timely processing.

Your submission process doesn’t change, but you can expect more frequent communication as requests are reviewed if essential information is missing.

Helping people get the right support for their injury and recovery

We’ve seen a rapid increase in the number of people seeking equipment to support their rehabilitation, people needing more equipment for longer, and more requests for off-list equipment.

We’re looking at our process for non-list equipment requests and identifying improvements as part of our ongoing work with Enable New Zealand, to improve service to our kiritaki (clients) and support long-term sustainability of ACC.

Assessing your requests quickly

Missing or unclear information may result in requests for further information and delayed approval.

To help us assess your requests quickly, make sure you:

  • request list equipment in the first instance where appropriate
  • provide clinical rationale as to why list items are unsuitable
  • clearly outline the link between the covered injury, recommended equipment, duration of need, and rehabilitation goals
  • explain why equipment is the best option instead of technique adjustments, modifying existing equipment, or using natural supports
  • avoid making equipment recommendations that exceed the specific injury needs
  • offer more than one equipment recommendation or suitable alternatives.

Your recommendations help kiritaki get the right equipment to support their recovery, independence, and rehabilitation. Good equipment decisions help make sure support is available for the people who need it, when they need it.

The information required for equipment requests is outlined in the Managed Rehabilitation Equipment Services (MRES) Operational Guidelines, pages 12-13.
